9-Month Appointment Guidelines

Pharmaceutical Sciences Graduate Programs

Background:

During Spring of 2022, a side letter was appended to the current GEO contract mandating that a taskforce be created to explore the feasibility of expanding the percentage of 9-month assistantships. The GEO-UIC Taskforce on 9-Month Appointments released its recommendations in Fall of 2023.

Departmental Implementation:

In recognition of graduate student concerns, and in response to the recommendations of the GEO-UIC Taskforce on 9-month Appointments, effective Fall Semester 2024, the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences (PSCI) will appoint first year teaching assistants (TAs) on an academic year or 9-month basis (08/16 – 05/15). This practice should ensure that at least 30% of individual teaching assistants (TAs) and graduate assistants (GAs) who will be employed in both Fall and Spring semesters in the unit receive nine-month appointments.

PSCI will continue its general practice of adhering to uniform appointment dates for semester-long assistantships (Fall, 08/16 – 12/31; Spring, 01/01 – 05/15) such that there is no break in service between semester-based assistantships.

Resources:

The campus has created a Funding Summary Dashboard that provides data on assistantships, tuition and fee waivers, stipends, appointment length, and fee assessments. This tool is available under the Human Resources section of the University Dashboards.
